Rostov State Puppet Theatre named after Vladimir.S. Bylkov
There is one of the best children theatres in 46 Universitetsky street – Puppet Theatre named after the People’s Actor of Russia Vladimir Bylkov. Everything is created in it for the meeting with beauty, for children and their parents.
Rostov State Puppet Theatre is one the oldest in our country. Its history dates teak to the puppet actory group which began their work for children in the 20-th years of the previous century. Meanwhile puppet actors, M. Kushnarenko, N/ Smirnova, A.Dora, were among them, worked rather successfully, with high spirits and talant, that’s why Azovo-Chernomorsky District Komsomol Comittee decided to create a puppet theatre. It opened its doors for spectators first in 1935. Some generations of the Don district citizens grew on its performances. Being adults they take their children and grandchildren to the theatre of their childhood.
In different periods famous producers were the theatre leaders – Boris Cakhnovsky – K.S. Stanislavsky’s pupil, Leonid Stelmakhovitch – V.E. Meyerholds pupil. S.V. Obraztsov’s pupil – Vladimir Bylkov – was the art leader of the for more 35 years.
The theatre history remembers all persons – wonderful actors, being the initiators of its opening, among then – the Honored Actress of Russia S. Isayeva, M. Kushnarenko (son is the Honored Actor of Russia I. Kushnarenko, and granddaughter Helena continue their successful service to Melpomena), S. Ulybashev, I. Chubkov, G. Pidko, A. Derkach and many others.
Each performance of the theatre is a moralizing lesson. Theatre conducts a serious adult talk about constant life values with young spectators proposing a work to the children’s soul. The theatre repertoire policy is based on these principles.

Our theatre systematically, with great success at the spectators and recognition from theatre community toured in Russia and countries of the near and for abroad, such as Donetsk, Kharkov, Kyiv (Ukraine), Kishinev (Moldova), Moscou, Krasnodar, Stavropol, Vladikavkaz (North Ossetia), Yerevan (Armenia), Helsinki, Kayani (Finland), Dublin (Ireland), Edinburgh (Scotland), London (England), Bonn, Berlin, Dortmund, Francfurt-on-the Main (Germany), Lodz, Lomjhe, Warsaw (Poland), Sophia, Pleven (Bulgaria), La-Valetta (Malta), Paris, Strasbourg (France), Barcelona, Lloret de Mar (Spain).
The theatre is a Laureate of many Russian and International Festivals, such as «Artvizit» in 199, 2000, 2001, «Russian Comedy» 2002, «Melpomena» in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, «Don Theatre Dekada» in 2001, «Silver Sturgeon» in 2001. «Lyalkovy zuztritchi» in 2002, 2004. Many creative persons, working in the theatre are awarded with the Honorary Badges «For Achievements in Culture» of Ministry of Culture of Russian Federation, Diplomas and Gratitudes of Ministry of Culture of Russian Federation, of Rostov Region Governor, Ministry of Culture of Rostov Region, Rostov Branch of Theatre Authorities Union, Special prizes of theatre journalists seminars.
The times out theatre toured in Moscou with the creative accounts – in 1953, 1985 and 1998, where it received a high mark form the theatre critics and the community for its performances. It also received a great interest from mass media side and a cordial welcome of the spectators. By the way the Russian Puppet actors «patriarch» S.V. Obraztsov gave a high mark to the creation of the original, perspective and unique company of actors of Rostov State Puppet Theatre.
Talanted creators work at the theatre at present. Among then are – Art Leader Andrey Bylkov-Krat, painters Igor Popelkov, Ludmila Makushina. Honored Actors of Russia Nadehjda Vasiljeva, Igor Kushnarenko, Alexander Vasilenko, and young actors graduate –students of Rostov Branch of St. Peterburg University of Culture and Arts – Helena Kushnarenko (the Governors Premium Holder in the field of the theatre Arts, Laureat «The Young Melpomena» 2001 competition) and Michail Alexandrov (master-class of docent Andrey Bylkov-Krat). Young actors, such as Alexander Boiko, Helena Gratchyova, Svetlana Mitushina, Helena Zaretskaya, Tatyana Kuzmina perceive «secrets»of the Puppet Theatre thanks to their Art Leader, docent of Rostov Branch of St. Peterburg University of Culture and Arts Andrey Bulkov-Krat as well.
Famous composers, such as Georgy Balayev, Vitaly Khodash, Anatoly Kusuakov, Alexander Bakshi, Michael Fuxman, Yuri Vesnyak, as well a poet Nikolas Scryobov, writers Michael Sholokhov and Peter Lebedenko had a cooperation with our theatre.
Our Puppet Theatre has great projects concerning creation the performances for adults – «Faustus» by Z-V. Goette, «Romeo and Jullet» by W. Shakespeare, «Low Farce» by A. Block.
We present Happiness to children more than 70 years.
